Matt nodded. "Sam, I've hated keeping this secret from you. I've considered
you a close friend and ally. I think you can understand why I can't discuss
this with many people, though, especially those within Starfleet. The British
Fleet learned of my secret once. I was held in a dungeon for three years
before
I could escape, with their surgeons running all sorts of tests on me to try and
figure out how to make others like me."
"I imagine that is a constant concern.", Samuel answered before taking another
sip of his spirit. "I understand your reasons for keeping it a secret. Please
know that it is safe with me. Hell, I just might forget about it....", he
continued managing a jab at his illness.
Matt cringed a bit. He felt guilty enough about things as it was. "I know my
secret's safe with you, Samuel," he said simply. Otherwise, he would not have
shared it.
"So, just how long do you plan on staying the Starfleet in this go around?"
Matt shrugged. "I've gotten further along than I had thought possible," he
said. "Surgeon General is the terminal position for me, I can't go any higher.
I figure I'll serve it out another ten years or so, less if someone comes along
who do the job better than I, and then I'll have to move on because folks will
begin to notice that I'm not aging much. There's only so much I can do with
cosmetics."
"I hope that I have that long."
"Once you and Carrhae and Bedru are gone.... I'll probably move aside, too."
Of all the things that Matt had said, Lasiter did not take issue. Until this
last one.
"Don't you dare wait that long.", Samuel started a tough ticked. "This job
killed off my marriage and poisioned my relations with my son. Don't you dare
wait. Serve as long as you want to, but only that long. Take time for you and
Carrhae. Don't make my mistake. You two have served, one way or another, for
longer than anyone has a right to expect. That includes me. Make time for
yourselves."
He was not mad at him, just that he did not want them to become married to
the job.
