According to the Spanning Sync website:

"Until recently Google Contacts didn't display company contacts
correctly, so Spanning Sync used the company name from Address Book
for both the company name and the contact name in Google. Google
Contacts now shows company contacts correctly, so Spanning Sync no
longer doubles up company names."

So I just did the doubling up of the Company name to Last Name and the
problem is solved.

I really shoulnd't have to do that, but it's a minor inconvenience. I
recommend that Spanning Sync have a setting so that the user can
choose to do that duplication or not.

Thanks!
