As I drive a Fedora, I don't know the mysteries of Suse. But I
have put a debug and a kdebug 5 in /etc/ppp/peers/speedtch and I get a lot
of messages from the kernel, very useful. I think you can put it also in
/etc/ppp/options.
Why are you not working as root? It is more confusing, yet...
