We have to start with the definitions before jumping to the examples and note that the impact on the heat flow is a major consideration. Are the lower beams going to impact the heat flow. No so the beams are simply obstructions and do NOT impact the determination of the type of construction. What gets screwed up with teh beam and girder example is the 3 ft to 7-1/2 ft. What about when beams are less than 3 ft which happens such as for a single point heavy load? Does it magical not impact the heat flow so that its now unobstructed. Of course not. Otherwise, we would have the same dimension for wood joist.

So what would you call the type of construction for a ceiling with 8" solid members that have the same impact as wood joists?

Two sidebars:
1. Metal channeled ceilings can not be classified as Panel constriction unless you block all the channels over the beams.
2. Insulation impacts heat flow so impacts the ceiling classification.

Confirm or deny my translation of what you said (since your use of
open space is confusing)

You have beams spaced more than 7-1/2 ft apart supporting 8" and 10"
purlins spaced 4-5ft apart. The roofs sits on the purlins.

Poll:

Are typical 8" and 10" purlins spaced 4-5' apart with open space above the beams where the purlins rest considered OBstructed or Unobstructed
construction?
