If the 300 cubic has any bearing if the pocket is less than that you should be able to place the deflector 6" down from the pocket. This same heat trapping would delay the heads meaning you shouldn't use the EC heads unless rated for obstructed construction. Yes the definitions matter but what is really happing to the heat flow and the head response.
