Look at exhibit 3.35 and 3.36 in the 2002 sprinkler systems handbook. The
examples for beam and girder construction are shown as bays or panels.
Qouting the handbook, "Beam and girder construction causes heat from a fire
to accumulate within the bays or panels formed by the SUPPORTING MEMBERS."
The beam and purlin construction is clearly not beam and girder
construction, as the beams will not trap the heat.

Subject: RE: purlins

Without insulation, it falls under obstructed construction. That is obvious.
If a building has 10" purlins with 8" of insulation filling the space
between, would the purlins and insulation combination meet the definition of
"impede heat flow or water distribution? IMHO, the obstruction in that case
would be no worse that the obstruction created by the top chord of a bar
joist, which is classic unobstructed construction. This argument would also
segue into the Icynene thread earlier today.
