Dan,

Thanks for the response. You might be right, although NFPA 11 does not seem to care about the way the gas is packed. The curious thing is that, on the other hand, NFPA 11 does say that Liquefied Natural Gas can be protected by hi-ex foam:

Paragraph 6.3* Hazards Protected.
Hazards that medium- and high-expansion foam systems shall be permitted to protect include the following:
(1)... skip... (3)
(4) Liquefied natural gas (high-expansion foam only)

So, what could be the difference between LNG and LFG that justifies that LNG can be protected by hi-ex foam and LFG can not?

I forgot to tell that we are looking at outside-air foam only.
I agree with you that inside-air foam might not be a good idea to protect combustible or flammable gases.

Well,
Explosion of canisters might destroy the foam.
I applies at least for inside room type foam.

Subject: Aerosols and hi-ex foam

Dear colleagues,

NFPA 11 - 2007 reads in paragraph
6.3.2 Medium- and high-expansion foam systems shall not be used on
fires in the following hazards:
(1)... skip...
(5) Liquefied flammable gas

Does anyone of you know if it is the intention of this paragraph to
prevent that storage of aerosol cans will be protected by high-expansion
foam?
We are looking at aerosol cans that contain some butane and/or
propane as propellant, besides a flammable liquid like paint and solvent.
NFPA 30B only speaks about sprinkler; it doesnot tell us wether it is
possible or not to protect storage of aerosols with foam.

Are there any testresults available regarding the protection of
storage of aerosol cans with high expansion foam?
