Several years ago at a concert, a friend of mine tried to convince me that if you cut the bottoms out of two beer cups and hang them on your ears, the music sounds WAY better and more focused, especially the base frequencies. Of course, this was at a Grateful Dead concert and the last we saw of him for the day he was dancing through the crowd with beer cups on his head. Since then, I have taken most scientific theories put forth by my acquaintances with a dose of skepticism that is exponentially related to the level (and quality) of their intoxication during the period of "experimentation".
