>From the 2009 IBC Commentary, Section 901.2;

"For example, if a building owner chooses to provide sprinkler protection in
a certain area and such protection is not required by the code, the system
MUST BE INSTALLED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPLICABLE NFPA STANDARD and other
APPLICABLE requirements of the code such as water supply and supervision.
The EXTENT of the protection would not be regulated".

So the stakeholder defines the extent of the protected area, the protection
within that area, the water supply, supervision and other features that
serve that area must comply with the standard. When dealing with "not
required" applications a performance statement indicating the fire
protection goals of the intended protection is in order. The goals must
match the design.

Hope that helps.

Subject: non-required systems

The exception in section 901.2 of the IBC (2003) states: "Exception: Any
fire protection system or portion thereof not required by this code shall be
permitted to be installed for partial or complete protection provided that
such system meets the requirements of this code." Does this mean that an
Architect/Owner can pick and chose what the wants to protect if the system
is not required? Anybody dealt with this from a liability standpoint?
