Sounds like you did well there George! (Utilizing the 1' shift rule I'm
presuming).

We've had to put in some systems where the under obstruction sprinklers far
outnumber the ceiling level sprinklers (slotted cabletrays, piperacks, round
ducts....).

I couldn't believe the FM 4'x4' rules when we first saw them, fortunately we
had flat duct and could go single row 8' o/c. still a lot of EC25 storage
sprinklers, but they saved us plenty in the rest of the building (25' bays,
2 lines per instead of three lines of ESFR).

FM 8-9/2-0 has some pretty extreme requirements for sprinklers under
obstructions in storage occupancies. Especially if the obstruction is not a
continuous flat bottom (4'x4' max spacing). Obstructions over 2' require
sprinklers underneath. I'd say in order to apply the equivalency you'd have
to provide all extra requirements that FM specify (and there are quite a
lot), to justify eliminating from the calc. And have a AHJ that's willing to
go along with the plan.

That was my thought, after all they do have a requirement for this - if I'm
not mistaken, they require you to use the same size branch lines and
sprinklers or you do have to perform calculations on these sprinklers.

Perhaps the "=" is in the extensive testing done by FM demonstrating the
need, or lack thereof, of adding the sprinklers to the calcs?

Cause it sure is tough to come up with written technical substantiation to
support Equivalency when all you do is less.
Same thing Bill Brooks pointed out on larger SF/system, although I'd rather
write something on that, maybe lessening # of valves = less chance one is
shut.
When all you do is omit flow cause the other guy says you can, where's the =
or better?

Subject: ESFR Calc 2 hds under obstructions

NFPA #13 (2010) 16.2.3.5. Does the ROP/ROC for 2013 NFPA #13 contain any
proposals to drop the requirement to calc an additional 2 heads under
obstructions below ESFR systems as FMG has done?
