We have yet to find an AHJ that will go along with not meeting the NFPA minimum.

Especially if the obstruction is not a continuous flat bottom (4'x4' max spacing). Obstructions over 2' require sprinklers underneath. I'd say in order to apply the equivalency you'd have to provide all extra requirements that FM specify (and there are quite a lot), to justify eliminating from the calc.
