You may want to take a look at NFPA 45 (Standard on Fire Protection for Laboratories Using Chemicals), I'm not sure if there's a minimum square footage that gets you away from the application of that standard, but table 10.1.1 calls for OH2 for class A or B fire hazard labs, C and D would be OH1. I don't use the standard much to know it inside and out, but it may be applicable to your situation. Mike Morey, SET, CFPS Sprinkler Designer BMW Constructors, Inc. This particular use will be inside an existing facility where they are adding walls and a mezzanine to create two small labs. Neither level will be over 1,100 sf with 8'6" ceilings. I'm thinking that it needs to be classified as OH 1 having a similar function as to a "Dairy products manufacturing and processing" facility. This is based on the Annex of NFPA 13, 2010 ed., A.5.3.1. Would anyone think that this should be classified differently?
