What he said, I've called for them on freezer systems so they can be can trip 
tested without filling the entire system.
I have also used them on fixed water spray systems in situations where you 
really don't water on what your protecting unless it's on fire. For example 
transformers, coal conveyers, bearing boxes, burner fronts and the like.

Partial Trip Test?

I have installed these on pre-action and deluge before.  Very useful when 
testing the activation pre-comissioning.

Co-worker is looking at a contractor's riser detail. Systems are straight water 
deluge, protec-o-wire (electric activation).

There is a BF control valve at the header AND one on top of the deluge valve.

Exhibit 7.8, page 210 of NFPA 13 2013 handbook shows something similar.  

Does anyone know the reason for two control valves?
