In my case, my 8 year old server is starting to die, I want to move SL from that to a new server, however... Getting everything setup and going in a single swing is a total pain. I guess on the other side of the coin I could just grab any old Linux / BSD distro and create the same. However then its adding the PostGres, etc and getting everything working.
Andrew, I recently had to replace the server/workstation's motherboard (which required a new CPU and RAM) and replaced the two old hard drives with a new 500G/7200rpm SATA2 drive. Restored almost everything from the original primary hard drive. Also, did a pg_dumpall (plus a separate Ledger123 dump), replaced postgres-8.3.3 with -9.0.1 and restored all saved data. SL/L123 came right up working. With a plan it's not terribly onerous. I run Slackware and used the exercise to upgrade from -12.2 to -13.1. While I discovered only yesterday that printing got borked somehow (test pages from the cups admin web page print, but not checks from L123 or a document from acroread), everything else is working. Today I get the printer working again before anything else. Using pg_dumpall and restore I also upgraded postgres from -8.3.3 to -9.0.1 so that's current, too. Worth the effort.
