I'd suggest that after the initial scan the db file becomes locked for some reason - hence it can't be opened on the second scan - but you really need Michael Herger to cast his eye over the log file to tell you what is going on.
Trust me though that running LMS on something different and pointing it at your NAS will work and is the way forward as more or more NAS become incapable of running LMS without significant (and in some cases risky) modifications.
