A further update on this: I left a ping going in the background to
www.mysqueezebox.com on the same machine that LMS is running on.
Everything has been good for a few days but, just now, I noticed that
the ping was timing out. Sure enough, LMS was unresponsive. However, I

Now the question is if LMS goes unresponsive for the same reason the ping fails. Or if the ping fails because LMS does something to bring all of your system down? I'd bet on the first case.

So, could this be the trigger for the problem, the IP address of
www.mysqueezebox.com changing? Does LMS use www.mysqueezebox.com or
does it resolve the IP address and use that (hence it would fail if the
IP address changed)?

No. mysb.com is not a single server with one single IP address. Not only are there datacenters in the US and in EU, but both consist of several load-balancers. The DNS server would return one out of X addresses to distribute the load at that level already. Therefore you can get a different IP address with every request.
