I don't really see the big difference between using tags and using a
folder structure - you're just substituting one source of information
for the other.  Many tagging programs can create a complex folder
structure from tags, and vice-versa.

I happen to like tags because they are more flexible and elegant. 
Metadata is the future, and having it travel with the object makes a
lot of sense.
