While I know that Bert started out his message here attempting to hew to the list's guidelines (see http://www.45mm.com/sslivesteam_guide.html), the words raise an interesting dilemma. In recent months the traffic on this list has dwindled. My obligations to my business and non-steam-train life are such that I just don't have the time to "prime the pump" as they say, to make the list more active. We had gone eight days since the last series of postings; three days before that, in the 10 previous days, there was only one posting and on and on. I am wondering -- and ask any and all to respond to the question here -- whether I should broaden the scope of the mailing list. Rather than the phrase "It is not about ride-on engines and it's not about electric railroad garden railroads ..." maybe it should say something like, "Ancillary topics might include steam railroad history, issues about rolling stock, tracking laying (ballast, frost-heave), switch-building, model-building ..." You get the idea. In other words, what I'm asking is this: Should we broaden the scope of the list so that it might become more active? Should we keep the scope the way it is and determine other ways of making it more active? Or, should we keep the scope the way it is and not worry about it not being too active? Of course, I reserve the right to make the final decision (this is, after all, a benevolent dictatorship), but I thought list members should get an opportunity to express their opinions.
