Thanks for your thoughts! I agree with most of what Steve wrote. "Conversations" on the list which directly apply to our little steam locos should be acceptable, I thought Bert's question on coaches was appropriate, after all, our steam engines are meant to do work and a consist is an integral part of steam loco. Now that Hornby has entered the 00 (HO) live steam hobby, acceptance on the list would seem OK to me ( I know! that's just because I own one!) However¾ I'd like to see some input on 3-1/2" / 4-3/4" gauges but those are already discussed on occasion. Even discussion of the prototype locos is in order, we model them, right? or try to! One problem with lack of messages on the list may be "competition" : www.mylargescale.com has quite a lot of messages on small scale live steam and a lot appears on the Aristocraft Mikado live steam loco can be found on Aristocraft forums. Then there is the G1MRA website!. To get the list busy we need a new subject to motivate folks, we seem to go in fits and spurts. Like: What wick material is best for alcohol fired engines. I have tried many types and they all work well if packed correctly. However, lets take ceramic brick or other solid material-- great and very long lasting - but I find that the flames are often drawn off the wicks- so now I put wick material, packed a little higher than the solid ones and furthest from the draft. This flame does not go out and is drawn across the solid wicks and keeps them alight. This is especially effective on the Aster Stirling which has a sharp exhaust blast. Another, how many own the Aristocraft Mikado, or the Hornby 00 live steam and what are your thoughts? Thanks again, Dave.
