All, I believe Regner uses a lot of brass without any problems. However Most "Distilled" water on sale in Europe is de-Ionised, not distilled. The water could take Ions out of the brass. Regner also advises adding some normal water to avoid this possibility.
I still see a number of Merlin engines doing good service. Perhaps the problem is the water?
