It's a good idea to leave your other drive in place, that way you don't care
if the new one boots or not.
I was going to recommend a Yamaha IDE drive because only older computers
like ours can use them, and so they're cheap, but others say there's no
back-up software for them.  I got one, and plugged it into my ATAPI cable
which was available because I have the SCSI CD-ROM.  It has burned every
brand and size of CD I've tried, no problems.  It boots, too.  Is your
CD-ROM SCSI or ATAPI?
If you do go SCSI, you don't need SCSI-2 because the transfer speeds for 8X
R-W are only 1.2 Mb/sec.
Can you see the rating of the power supply?  It should be on it, on a
sticker.  Anyway, your CDR-W and your Ethernet board aren't going to draw
enough wattage to worry about.
