AppleShare Prep is the preferences file containing AppleShare servers to connect to at start-up time - I've never seen any way to actually bring up a list of such servers on the screen and de-select them. Once you get the Chooser to have one mount at start-up, that's it. Or is it? > Turn off File Sharing. Do not log into a network if you don't need to. I keep it off - can't connect to my Psion with it running at the moment with it on (with it using Printer Port, maybe selecting Remote Only will elect to have it not use either port). This is also why I want a decent FTP server - I currently have NetPresenz and this requires File Sharing to be used, which slows the Mac down far too much, causes OS crashes, and for now, steals a serial port. There seem to be no nice freeware/shareware FTP servers for classic Mac OS that run well (there's a Java one but I'm loathe to run that) and support user logins (ISP requirement). Well, I could run the one in NCSA Telnet? ;) > Turn off Software Update. Off. > ColorSync is fine. Don't disable it. Don't see it doing me any good. > App Switcher is bogus, turn it off if you want. Bogus? Damned useful application if that's all you have, but I use A-Dock. > Printer Spooler or whatever is irrelevant. As I have no printer attached, yeah > A-Dock? Never heard of it. A Dock-like app for Classic (and now ported to X) - I find it's much nicer than the real Dock - more featured. > Control Strip is a good thing. Is that sarcasm? Patronising? I mean, I run it! > Time? That might be it What, hard disc access for ages? It's only set to check the time via Apple's European time server once every three days. > It's not icons drawing. Then what? Why are the icons bad? > How long are we talking about anyway, a nice smooth running SM should take > like a minute or two to boot, fancy extensions and third party and all. I specifically do not mean during the marching icons period - this is after that, and there is NOTHING on screen to suggest what it might be doing, period. I can't even tell if the Finder is loaded or not, I'm guessing that it's not, so some extension, or the kernel, is doing a lot of hard disc access, churning, all sorts. Booting from hitting power takes something like three and a half minutes, of which a good portion is just staring at the desktop wallpaper while id grinds away. I partially assumed that everyone had this, that it was a feature of 9.1's design, but maybe it really is something odd with mine. Whether it's a factor of having 40,000 files on my main partition, I don't know. I'll try a reboot with extensions off, see how long that takes, and then try ruling out all daemons, and anything suspicious looking. -- StarMax is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and... / Buy books, CDs, videos, and more from Amazon.com \ / <http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/lowendmac> \ Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> StarMax list info: <http://lowendmac.com/lists/starmax.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> For digest mode, email: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subscription questions: <mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Archive: <http://www.mail-archive.com/starmax%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
