During the pause between the DeskTop picture showing up and hard drive
icons showing up, the Finder is loading. Of the many things it does when
Finder starts up, two come to mind that may be affecting your Max. If you
have an alias of your hard drive(s) in your Apple menu, it is taking time
to scan your drives and create the list. The second is loading of the
desktop items. I think it might help if you run the freeware TechTool Lite
to rebuild your desktop. Another thing to try is to trash the Finder
Preferences file.
