        Hmmm, sounds a lot like the Finder is busy rebuilding the desktop. 
Have you run Disk First Aid and done a disk check lately? It's either 
that or some sort of attempt at a network connection, is my guess. You 
have AppleShare already off, so that is not likely the cause. I presume 
you are running HFS+?
