Wierd, I know there are folks out tger running X on pre-G3s, including
Starmaxs. I just dont want to have to run over there rebuilding
desktops and trashing preferences and explaining that some software or
other just sucks and will always cause problems.
We seem to have got off on a tangent pretty quickly-- I wonder if
someone would be kind enough to address the question about what sorts of
things they have to pass on because they're stuck in 9.
Can you use an iPod?
Can you use wireless internet? How do you do that? Are there any
wireless PCI cards that work?
Can you use a USB 2.0 card in the Starmax? I assume Firewire works OK.
Have there been any drivers written recently to enable newer peripherals
to work?
Thanks,
Howard

"New" to list here . . .
my Starmax is gathering dust, replaced by a Cube as my music server.
My neighbor across the alley needs a computer and internet to span the
"digital divide".
I'm starting to get rusty on everything pre-OSX, since I've been using a
G4 and an iBook in various incarnations of Jaguar and Panther for a good
while now.
The computer is I think originally a Starmax 180, but has a 320 G3 card
(made by that german company that got in trouble for stealing code--
forget the name). It has 160 MB of RAM, an 1/0 magic CD-ROM that seemed
like it never worked quite right in there, a 4x SCSI CD burner that also
seemed like it never worked right in there, a 100 GB 5400 RPM Maxtor
hard drive that's probably about 5x bigger than this neighbor needs . .
. a 56k modem that some nice person just mailed me for free to use in
this project-- a Supra express.
I can figure out how to swap in a smaller hard drive and such, but my
main questions have to do wioth OSX and OS9.
What sorts of dead-ends might I run into with OS9.x?
What sorts of problems are people having running X on this thing? Is
there a driver written for this G3 card? I was successful getting
Panther up and running on a beige G3 not too long ago using X-Post facto
. . . would it be significantly harder to accomplish the same on a Starmax?
I'm not sure but I suspect the kids are probably using macs w/ OSX in
school . . .
Anyways, I'm sure I have more questions but it'll be good to see if
anyone's out there . . .
Yours,
Howard
