[I have a] problem with emptying the trash. It just
starts reading with consecutive numbers (for well
over 1 hour) saying "Preparing to empty the trash"
but it crashes before it ever finishes.

As a solution, I [took the four folders out from the trash]
and the trash will empty properly.
This is a good solution.
When I had files that would not delete from the trash I
transformed them into .sit files, thereby hiding whatever
caused them not to be able to be deleted.
