My StarMax runs on OS 8.6. iCab was very unstable; Eudora also often crashed. (Interestingly, the order in which applications were opened had a very big influence on the instability.)
A half year ago I was browsing through the iCab web site and came across an FAQ entry, "What to do if iCab crashes?" It recommended to upgrade the Text Encoding Converter version 1.4.2 or 1.4.3 to version 1.5. This information was sent to us by Robert Peden (thanks a lot): Super Bug Fix (for those experiencing constant iCab crashes) of all MacOS 8.6 and OS8-era machines (at least all those with Text Encoding Converter version 1.4.2 or 1.4.3). Please upgrade to Text Encoding Converter 1.5 or later (1.5 is available for free download). This has cleared up A LOT of crashes on iCab when I was using MacOS 8.6. The TEC 1.5 download is available from the Apple ftp server <ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/TEC_1.5. sit.hqx>. Although this is a developer file (which contains tons of source code, etc), it does contain a working copy of Text Encoding Converter 1.5 which is much more stable than 1.4.2 / 1.4.3 versions (which MacOS 8.6 installs). Not just do you have to update the extension, but also the Text Encoding Converter Encodings folder inside the system folder - replace it with the copy in the TEC 1.5 Archive).
