Adding to the replies Peter has already received, I
thought those of you with access to an air compressor
might be interested to hear of my father's solution to
the dust (and, perhaps, fogging of goggles) problem: He
tied a tube leading from an air compressor to the centre
of his forehead with the outlet pointing down over his
nose so that all the dust was blown away. This meant he
had clean fresh air without having to wear a cumbersome
mask.
As far as I can tell, it worked very well. He was very
healthy and had a long and successful career as a
sculptor carving in various stones and woods as well as
modelling directly in plaster of paris and,
occasionally, clay.
