You can try carving a piece of wood to fit the shape
then glue some sand paper (silicon carbide for stone) to
it. Use a clap to secure the set of the paper. Depending
on the depth you need to get to I have had success with
clothes pins (maple) for quickly shaping a tool.
I can't help but ask is it really necessary to polish an
area that will be unseen.
Usually in 19th century carvings of foliage the leaf
forms are often suggested using drills.
