Eric, I think it's generally better to clean the pages rather than delete them or forward the site somewhere else. In the past months there seem to have been a number of reports, from people who deleted their infected site pages, that the badware flag didn't get removed quickly. There have been enough reports to make me wonder if page deletion looks to Google like a suspicious, or at least non- definitive, cure that might make removal of the flag take longer than if they came back and actually found a cleaned page.
Nonetheless, I would expect that if the forwarding URL was clean, the flag would eventually get removed even if it took longer. That suggestion by the host doesn't sound very plausible to me. Also consider the possibility that this might involve more than just your site. A Google search on smartyhost hacked turns up 75 results that might be worth taking a look at. That's a relatively high number of results with such a similar theme.
