Yeah, 2GB is plenty for me, it's really a test box. Right now there's under
50GB of data on it :) It's also just a backup server, so read performance is a
non issue. It'll either be streaming data to it as fast as the drives can go,
or reading a TB or two off it. I also just bought a small amount of memory
knowing that prices can halve in 6 months, so if our needs increase I'll simply
upgrade the ram.

I can't remember off the top of my head what version I'm running, I think it's
OpenSolaris Community Edition (aka Nevada) build 77 or thereabouts. We wanted
to test the latest available at the time figuring it'll probably be in the main
Solaris by the time the full project goes ahead. Right now it's just running
Samba, but we've also done a full test of clustered ZFS, NFS & Samba with no
problems.

In terms of the drives, pick whichever you prefer, but check out some of the
silent PC websites before you buy. Drives are one of the noisiest components
if you're after a silent PC, and those WD ones really are quiet!

The supermicro card is the AOC-SAT2-MV8, but I believe there's a PCI-E SAS card
just been released by them that uses the same chipset as the new Sun x4540
server which is probably a better buy now.
