Well, to be honest, going to unstable is very possibly going to
make your computer unstable and very quirky. That's why it's
called unstable. I recently upgraded to woody (while still
considered unstable, it's way more so than the "official" "unstable"
tree) from Hail 2.06 using only woody sources. Then upgraded my
gnome to the most recent via spidermonkey.ximian.com (and a
mirror of it on rpmfind of all places). Then installed kde2 from the
tdyc site (kde2 for potato). Aside from a glitch with the gdm login
screen which I have yet to resolve, everything works great! (I just
kill gdm first then run startx and up she comes).
Even Evolution still works and that thing is still beta. So, I'm not
sure what exactly the problems are that you're having but
understanding that, while certain packages in unstable may work
just fine on their own, upgrading your whole system to it is likely to
produce some destabilizing effects which may be what you're
experiencing.
It's just a bit risky although I'm sure there are those who are
running entirely "unstable" systems. I just don't have the
knowledge or patience to do that. I use my system on a daily
basis so I don't like to take risks knowing my lack of knowledge. :)

What if everything is an illusion and nothing exists?
In that case, I definitely overpaid for my carpet.
