No, what I've done is, when the gdm login screen comes up, I go to 
another virtual terminal, log in as root, killall gdm, log out, log in as 
myself then startx.  It's a bit of a bother but it works.  And no, SPM 
and SAS have been working just fine.  Like I said, it's more of an 
inconvenience.  I'm sure I could remove gdm's starting up by 
disabling it from the startup services but haven't bothered yet 
seeing as I'd like to figure out why the problems with the gdm login. 
 Just haven't had time to do that yet.
