Dave,
Granted, It's harder to find an interpreter than it is to converted the materails for the blind. The normal procedure to obtain an interpreter is at least a week in advance.
But...the state law cannot speak for the Deaf. If they don't know what it's like to be Deaf, then they should have consult those that are Deaf BEFORE designing the law. However, if you were to study Deaf history, you would find hearing people deciding they know what's best for Deaf people which is plain downright ridciclious. That happen alot. For an example, back in 1890 ( or thereabout), there was an internatioanl confernce for Deaf teachers. What happened was hearing teachers turned around and told Deaf teacher " Since you are Deaf, you are not welcome. We know what's best for Deaf children." They decided oralism was the best method. They denied Deaf teachers to gain an access to confernce. In 1970's or sometime before that, they decided ( hearng peopel of course), that ASL coudl pose harm to English skill so they forever have change the landscape, BEYOND REPAIR. It is just like Native American being force to speak English and were not allow to use their native language and now you just don't see very many Native American children speaking native language.Fastforward to the year of 2004, what happen? Majority of Deaf adults cannot read or write well beyond THIRD grades. ( Including myself...not at third grade but still, I'm terrified of writing English formally). So...nowaday, Deaf ASL teachers to my dismay, occasionally become very defensive toward any hearing people asking to change sign language. They are very protective. And they should be. But not to th extend where it have harm my job as as ASL teacher outside classroom. ( they have to eb cerifitied, silly as it may seem. depiste of the fact ASL is my first langauge). Now Deaf children will never see the true language of orginial ASL. Never again. Damanged have been done and set in.
So, Dave, " because the state law said so" and you are inviting the storm from Deaf community. Really.
And I know what's best for Deaf so Im persoanlly am going to see this silly law to change.Because.. I say so.

The requirement isn't from the Kiffmeyer election office, it is in state law.

And of course for every person who is provided an interpreter, there is
another person -- the interpreter -- who is precluded from attending his/her
caucus. Unless of course you are lucky enough to find an interpreter who is a
resident of the same area and an adherent of the same party. That's why it's
harder than putting the material in large print or finding an accessible venue.
