It sure is nice to be agreeing with Chuck Repke again.
It might be on different levels though. So Pat Harris can afford to buy season tickets, perhaps this is beacuase he has a job outside of the Council and he beleived in the City's investment in the Wild from Day 1. I also believe he "splits" the season with some friends too.
I do believe that our council members should be in attendance at major events, absolutely. Neighborhood parades afford our elected officials the oppotunity to sit on a "float". During campaign seasons, many of these same parades limit participation to incumbent office holders, so the general public is not afforded that same oppotunity either.
Mayor Kelly took the trip to Denver, it was the right thing to do.
Before reimbursing his account Lee Helgen used his travel budget to pay his way. Frankly, I don't think he abused the fund. What is the difference between going to the All-Star Game and a League of Minnesota Cities dinner?
Our council members need to be seen supporting our community. Should they have declined tickets to receptions to the Ice Castle VIP tent for events not open to the general public.
Blatant disregard of regulation and abuse of a council posistion should be and is considered unacceptable. To be recognized as an elected official, and participating in events should be encouraged and accomodated.
I am glad that I didn't have to see Dan Bostrom walking from scalper to scalper trying to find a ticket.
Also, I recall seeing a majority of our council in the front row when President-Elect Bush was in town for his energy speech - that is good practice, they shouldn't have had to jump up or raise their hand from the rear of the room to be recognized.
- Matt Anfang Highland Park Happy to see my City's leaders wherever I go.

It sure is nice to be disagreeing with John again. This little love fest he and I have been having over the stadium has been weird.
I want my elect officials to be ambassadors for the City. I want my elected officials, who are my representatives, to walk through the door of that Civic Center that tax payers paid for anytime they get the chance and not pay one plugged nickel for it, I already paid that share. I still want the "common man" to be elected to public office and be able to function at the same level as any of those with higher incomes at City events or promotional opportunities. Two Councilmembers can afford to be season ticket holders to the Wild and potentially had access to the event. Do we want that to be the determining factor as to which elected officials were shmoozing around the Xcel and talking up the City?
I don't think the City should have paid for the tickets, I think that eight tickets should have been put aside for our representatives to be a part of the event.
If only the wealthy can serve, than our democracy is doomed. Those who have plenty of disposable income will never be bothered by the "gift ban." Heck, in the outside business Pat Harris is in, he might (I have no inside info) be able to write off his hockey tickets as a business expense if he goes with a client or a potential client. That's the ticket folks. If you want your elected officials to be a part of community events that might cost money then make darned sure you elect those who have good outside employment.
We'll clean up government! Give it to the rich!
