It's possible I may have overstated Coleman's support
in my precinct last evening (Ward 1, precinct 13).
First off, out of approximately 20 people, only about
5 or 6 actually spoke favorably about him. There were
2 of us who spoke positively about Ortega. So, that
leaves a lot of people who said nothing one way or the
other. I would also say that much of the pro-Coleman
sentiment was pretty soft; most of those commenting
didn't have strong feelings about him one way or the
other.
The point that was pushed hardest by the pro-Coleman
group was his ability to raise the money necessary to
take on Kelly. Not exactly the most ringing
endorsement. Also, the Finney and Lantry endorsements
were mentioned. Many people clearly would have liked
the opportunity to vote for either of them and their
endorsements seemed to me to carry a lot of weight.
Ortega was viewed as a good guy who would do a fine
job but was considered no match for Kelly, who was
really reviled. Which makes the pro-Coleman mood hard
to understand as he's a lot more like Kelly than is
Ortega. But that's why the Lantry/Finney endorsement
is so influential (and hard to understand as well).
