Well, Tim knows what the situation was, but I will say it seems to me that just
because he was once the target of the temper tantrums shouldn't disqualify him
from addressing the larger issue, which is a known fact and which has happened
to so many people.

I'm with you that personal behavior isn't relevant - just because we elect
these folks to do a job doesn't mean we own them! But this isn't about how
Randy acts at home or with his friends, this is about how he can't manage his
own temper, and how he governs through intimidation.

While he doesn't always go as far as he has lately - threatening Councilmembers
and legislators that he'll make certain areas or all of St. Paul pay the price
if they don't capitulate to his floodwall - there are some elements that seem
to be habit. Always the yelling, often waving his finger in the person's face,
and usually stomping out of the room when he can't win the argument. Like most
bullies, he's a coward at heart.

If a person can't manage themselves any better than that, I don't have a lot of
confidence that they can manage a city, and I'd be pretty angry if I didn't
find out until after the election. Like so many people were angry after Norm
Coleman won, when they found out too late that his lifestyle didn't stand up to
the "family values" that he preached.

And by the way, if he hadn't tried to present himself as holier than thou, I
would say that his marriage and how he raises his kids are entirely his
business; but once you start attacking someone else for having inferior morals,
your own morals are fair game.

Anyway, back to honest reporting. What ever happened to reporters digging a
little to get the truth, instead of just reporting who said what, or (worse)
reporting whatever someone says as if it's the truth, without checking the
facts.

How different would our mayor's race be if people knew more about how Randy
Kelly really works, or heard the truth behind Chris Coleman's council career,
instead of just accepting what he says?

Jeanne, are you referring to Mayor kelly refusing to participate in (walking
out of) an editorial board meeting if a specific beat reporter were present?

On the other hand, one has to wonder how a reporter is supposed to be objective
in his reporting once he is part of the story.

My observation is that reporters are very reluctant to report on the more
personal flaws and foibels of elected officials. I voted for Arnie Carlson at
least one time. I did that knowing the man had a serious temper. His temper had
an impact on the way the job got done. I always thought it was relevant to
report, but it seldom if ever was. There was at least one, ( I was involved in
the story so knew about it) situation where reporters were summoned and put in
a very very difficult position. The incident was never reported. The same fault
is shared by Mike Hatch, something that numerous people who are former
employees of the AGs office will attest to. I don't think that has ever been
reported, and it most certainly affects the way the job gets done there, to say
nothing of the turnover in the office. I have been told of situations where
reporters were on the receiving end of the abuse and I have several personal
friends who have suffered his wrath.

Failure to report these kinds of things probably can be understood, but since
it DOES affect the way the job gets done, I agree with Jeanne that it should be
reported.

It should also be reported if someone is seldom if ever in their office,
refuses to meet with constituents, doesn't have a clue what they are voting on
most of the time, are vulgar and profane when someone disagees with them, or
take every opportunity to put their hand on some body part of a nearby woman.
But, these things don't get reported either. Mostly we get only the way the
vote went.

I fully agree that purely personal things do not belong in the newspaper. I put
things in that category like someone's 12 year old son wetting the bed,
someone's spouse being picked up for shop lifting or whether or not a person
had an abortion.
