The Solaris vs. Linux vs. OS X vs. FreeBSD debate is painfully symptomatic of what has traditionally hindered Unix -- too many alternatives and too much variation. Rather than see SRSS splintered, my preference would be for Sun to address the remaining issues with Solaris on the desktop, principal among them being application support.

Rather than buy Apple, they should buy Adobe or Macromedia. They should form key partnerships with leading software vendors (and OSS projects) to ensure that those products will be well-supported on Solaris. They should revive Wine for Solaris x86 (this http://www.winehq.org/hypermail/wine-users/2004/03/0087.html just won't cut it!) I run both Solaris and Linux, and in my view Solaris is the better of the two -- but applications are king.

PS: Props to Sun for "saving" Solaris x86 by combining x86 and SPARC code into a single codebase. If you had not done that, this whole conversation would be moot!

It would be interesting to know what reasons you have for preferring Linux over Solaris in your environment.

I'm not the OP, but we currently run most of our desktops on
Solaris/SPARC with Sun Rays and are looking at moving to either
Solaris/x86 or Linux/x86 (we've been very happy with SPARC hardware but
the value just isn't there).

My main concern with Solaris/x86 is lack of application support. For
example, Adobe has told me that they no longer support Solaris and
there will be no future updates of software such as Adobe Reader for
this platform. Our backup software, Arkeia, does not have a client for
Solaris/x86. I have also found that it's a lot easier to get many free
software packages built for Linux than it is for Solaris.

I really like Solaris, and Linux still feels like a toy compared with
it, but these issues may end up forcing us to use Linux.
