I couldn't agree more. Instead of concentrating on adding features or value, a lot of projects concentrate on porting existing apps to different OSes, and OSes to different hardware. My latest gripe is with the current effort to porting opensolaris to PPC. I see very little need for that, especially when they are porting to Apple PPC. While it may be cool for the porters, it adds complexity and maintenance issues. I wish people would concentrate their efforts on better applications, better security and better administration tools. I'll then pick the hardware and OS to suit my needs.
