My scanner is plugged into a USB port, but I do have an ancient SCSI
external HD attached to my C500 that must be turned on before I start
the computer to show up on the desktop.
You don't have to have an external SCSI device on all the time,
butt......if you turn it off, you may have to shut down your computer
and turn the external on again before you start up. My inclination
would be to turn it off when not in use to extend the bulb life,
however long that may be.
Of course, it depends on your scanner needs. If you only use it
occasionally, off is probably better. You might also be able to
schedule your scans so you can do all your scanning at one time, save
the scans to the appropriate location, and then shut down the scanner.
Another possibility, if you have a USB port is to get a USB-SCSI
adaptor. However, I've never done this and don't know if it would
then be hot-swappable.
Someone will probbly show me up as wrong, but, far as I know,
external SCSI stuff is not hot-swappable, but your configuration may
be different. If the scanner icon shows up on your desktop when you
start up even though it isn't turned on, or appears if you turn it on
after the startup, then you should be able to turn it off and on at
will. If not, then the pre-startup turn-on would likely be necessary.
