I have a "Borg" sound set active; I don't use the "Speakable items" 
feature. I'll have to experiment

When I installed the Apple 3600i (Matsushita/Panasonic CR-508) last 
Monday, I deactivated CD-ROM Toolkit and reactivated the Apple 
drivers. Problem was still there. I've since completely deleted all 
CD-ROM Toolkit files per Neal's suggestion.
