Anyone else looked at the specs on the new PPC750FX from IBM? It's a
1 GHz G3 with up to 20X multiplier. Which means that on a 50 MHz bus
you could still get 1 GHz on the CPU. I'm not sure how much
performance you'd lose with such a high multiplier. Because our
S900s tend to go up to about 60 MHz bus speed most of the time, you
could probably do a 17X bus multiplier and something like a 59 MHz
bus speed and still get 1 GHz.

Further, IBM has put the 512KB L2 cache on the chip, so there's no
need for separate cache chips (saves a little money in assembly) and
the L2 cache runs full speed at the same speed as the CPU. The
disadvantage is that it's only 512KB and not 1 MB as most mid to high
end upgrades are these days.

I'm really drooling for an upgrade maker to stick this thing on a
ZIF. If I can figure out how to get my hands on a sample, I may
buy a used 233 or 266 Apple ZIF and see if I can rip off the old chip
and solder down one of these new ones.

Mad Dog, you ever have any luck soldering on BGAs? Actually, I'm not
yet sure the thing is pin compatible with older CPUs. IBM doesn't
appear to have a data sheet on their site, only marketing type stuff
so far. Odd, since they claim it's sampling in early 2002.
