Phillip,

I recently picked up one of those adapters, to try to get a couple of
older printers working with a G3 (Lombard) Laptop. I have not had a
chance to "play" with it yet.

Keyspan released an OSX driver for the Twin Serial Adapter. It is
Version 1.2, released on 05/13/02. It is available for download from
Keyspan's web site. The "fine print" from Keyspan on using the Adapter
in OSX is as follows: There are basically 2 requirements in order for
your serial device to work natively on Mac OSX (1) a Max OSX serial
port, which is provided by Keyspan's software and hardware (2) a serial
device that has Mac OSX software, that can see/access Mac OSX serial
ports. (Other note) If you serial device does not have Mac OSX native
software, you should not install the USB Serial Adapter software for OSX.

I am not familiar with that HP printer. Have you checked HP's web site
to see if they have written an OSX driver?

The other option is via Ethernet/Apple Talk. Most HP printers will work
on a network. Proxim (formerly Farallon) makes a reasonably priced
adapter for this purpose. Again, you would need to verify that your HP
printer has a networkable driver.

It is my understanding that you will not have much luck with a parallel
to USB adapter cable and printing in OSX. And, Apple was slow to get
involved with Bluetooth, so you can probably forget the Infrared port.

You did not say, but, can you print to the HP LaserJet when you boot
from OS9? (That is assuming you have 9 and 10 on different partitions)

You can install the Keyspan Serial Adapter Software in both OS 9 and
10. It is a different version for each. The "Read Me" PDF file that
comes with the OSX driver update Version 1.2 explains this option.

My plans for the Keyspan adapter are to get an HP DeskWriter , an Apple
StyleWriter, or an Epson Photo Printer working with the G3 Laptop (It
has no Serial ports). At this point, none of them have OSX drivers.
But all three are "supposed" to work via their respective Ethernet
connections. Already owning these three older printers... it would be
nice if one of them would work with the Laptop.

Nancy
