Is your wife's machine running OSX too? If she is not, you might try
connecting the printer to her machine, and try accessing it through
printer sharing that way.
I just took a look at HP's web site. They do sell a network adapter
cable for your machine. You could set up a small Ethernet network
between your computer, your wife's computer and the printer. The HP
cable is not cheap. But, you can probably get everything (the HP cable,
a small Ethernet hub and a couple of Ethernet cable) for around $100.
Rebooting into Classic every time you need to print something is a pain
where you sit.
