I managed to improve the situation a bit - corrected the internal 
SCSI chain termination problem.  Through various incantations and 
such (starting the drive on another machine and reblessing OS9, CUDA 
reset, etc) I was able to get it up and running again.

I'm still not particularly comfortable with the startup process, as I 
intend to put this machine into service as a web server, and I'll 
have to be able to remote restart it should it lock up.

Clues are still appreciated.
