Try trashing the Finder prefs (System Folder->Preferences Folder) and doing a desktop rebuild as a first step. You're not using any 3rd party Finder enhancements like 'Default Folder', or 'Action Utilities' are you? Other than that, I'd suspect an extension conflict, SCSI termination problems or System File corruption. Run Norton, Disk Warrior, and Disk First Aid to see if they say anything, of course.
