There is, but it yields different symptoms.  That's not the problem 
here, unless there's some new, as yet undiscovered, E100/G4 issue.

The old known one is that PowerLogix's E100 Enabler which is needed 
to use the E100 card with G3/G4 upgrades causes an apparently dead 
Mac if you also disable speculative processing.   The Mac will bong 
but never proceed past the black screen.   The solution lies in what 
order you load the E100 enabler and disable speculative processing. 
But I can never remember which one needs to be done first.  :-(  Of 
course, there's only two choices, but it takes about six reboots to 
test out.

If it comes up again, I'll go into the rest of the details.   That's 
not the problem here.
