It's possible with Apple's Drive Setup, but not automatically with the
installer option, and not recommended.

Regardless of which utility was used, the driver partitions need to be
up-to-date, or major mayhem will result.

Updating the device driver, formatting, partitioning and initializing
volume[s] are often done at the same time with the same software, but not
necessarily.

This is such a major leap--from System 7 to OS 9--that the quickest and
safest way to do it would be to back up the old volume, update the drivers,
re-initialize the volumes(s) and restart, with a clean slate. And as long as
you're about it, you may as well reformat.

The easy way is to use 'Disk Tools PPC.img' with the 'Make Disk Tools
floppies' diskscript in the 'Disk Tools Image' folder at the root of the OS
8.5 installer CD-ROM ;-)
