Hi Eric,
I put OS 9.1 on my C500 with the original 180 MHz CPU and it worked so 
I didn't need a G3 card.
I did put one in later. You don't need the G3 card for USB either since 
that's the software issue. The G3 card will speed the USB up however. 
You may be right about 8.6 or higher to use USB. HTH.
