When I did this upgrade several years ago I discovered that the gap between
8.1 -> 8.6 was much greater than 7.6.1 -> 8.1 or 8.6 -> 9.1. There are quite
a few drivers and utilities that are not compatible. If you start with a
clean install of 8.5, upgrade immediately to 8.6, add the "Font Manager"
update, and use the latest versions of all drivers, you should have a very
stable and useable system. If at all possible, use the latest version of
Apple's "Drive Setup" [2.0.7] to update the disk drivers and it's all good.
